Basically, it's about consumer confidence.

The idea is, with so much of the US economy based on people spending on stuff, that we keep people wanting to spend on stuff.

You do this by telling everyone things are fine. Repeating it over and over. because, for the most part, people believe it. And as long as they think the economy is fine, they keep spending, and the economy is.

That's why Bush was all about telling us to go to malls after 9/11. How patriotic it was.

The thing is, it's bullshit. There are significant problems with the economy that can't be addressed by getting people to buy an SUV or something. The hedge fund/mortgage scandal was deep and twisted, an entire setup of deregulation, bylaw twisting, and so forth that created a no-accountability zone where mortgages just showed up and people collected fees and got rich and so forth. And then they were shocked. SHOCKED. when it all failed.

So if you're a politician in office, it's a good thing to pretend everything is fine. Because people will believe you.

But when you have big major failures after big major failures, why the hell is McCain adopting that strategy?

I have no fucking clue.

Agreed.

This is the GIANT GOLDEN DOOR being left partway open for Obama to win the White House. This is the very easy, very real, very simple topic to rain down on everyone's skull.

If he doesn't take the reigns here soon and move, we're going to have 4 more years of Bush Doctrine to live under, and I'll be looking at Canada with newfound love.
